FAQ

Headshots | FAQs

I’m asked lots of good questions about the headshot process and how I work. I created this page as a resource for clients to get the info they need quickly. If your question isn’t answered here, please reach out.

As the world and our industries constantly change, I take a lot of time to think, and rethink, about what headshots are all about. These statements reflect my personal opinion and align with how I choose to work. My process is informed by years of experience and hundreds of photoshoots, all unique. My process has my client’s best interest in mind. All guidelines supports my overall goal of preparing my clients for success, offering an upbeat photoshoot environment, and delivering final product efficiently so you can begin to put your images to work for you.

The majority of my work centers artists and performers. This FAQ page reflects that. Not all recommendations may apply to those seeking corporate headshots. Use your best judgement with wardrobe selections for corporate headshots, with your knowledge of your particular industry-norms in mind.

Headshot 101:
Good To Know

    • A first impression.

    • A current image that captures you at your best!

    • Authentic, engaging and specific to you.

    • It looks like you (Accurate to how you will appear in-person for auditions and meetings.)

    • It is an industry tool for artists to showcase their appearance and casting potential.

    • A career branding tool for business professionals to put a face to their name.

    • Professionally, it is a helpful extension of you!

    • A glamour shot.

    • A passport or yearbook photo.

    • Your profile picture on social media.

    • A photo for your family’s holiday card.

While these types of images hold their own value in our lives and are sometimes used in the place of headshots, they’re not headshots and are not preferable in competitive professional markets.

  • There is a formula to taking a great headshot. Your headshot session should be a collaboration between you and your photographer. However, please keep in mind: Photography is an art form and a photographer is an artist. Artists each have a unique take on their medium and your headshot photographer is no exception. So, familiarize with their portfolio before booking! Know that booking with a specific photographer also means agreeing to trust their artistic discretion too.

  • Previously, for in-studio work I was based in Sausalito, CA. Nowadays, I prioritize vibrant, refreshing outdoor shoots for headshots! You can often find me shooting in favorite San Francisco neighborhoods, especially loving The Presidio and Dogpatch lately. In Marin, you’ll often see me in Mill Valley or Sausalito. In the East Bay, find me somewhere near College Ave in Elmwood!

  • I’ll keep an eye on the weather. If it looks like rain is coming, I’ll reach out to reschedule our session.

  • Here is what you will notice in my retouching style:

    • Complexion: Smoothing wrinkles. Clearing acne, scarring, and dry skin. Lightening dark circles under the eye.

    • Eyes: Sharpening and brightening the eyes, clearing redness or irritation.

    • Teeth: Subtle whitening and brightening.

    • Fly-Aways: Will refine the shape of hair and remove distracting fly-aways.

  • If you’re taking a DIY approach to your headshot makeup, I support you fully and am here to provide pre-shoot instructions and help with touch-ups along the way!

However, I always recommend booking with a professional makeup artist to elevate your final images! There are tricks to successful on-camera makeup that differ from your day-to-day makeup routine.

** Children under the age of 13 do not need to consider booking a professional makeup artist. **

  • Cancelation Policy

What happens when your photoshoot is on the books and somehthing comes up?

I appreciate notice of booking cancelations ASAP or, at minimum, 48 hours prior to your session. This allows me to offer my limited booking time slots to others.

    Last-Minute Cancellation | Rescheduling Policy

After a last-minute-cancelation (Last-minute: Within 48 hours prior to your session), should you choose to reschedule your session for another date/time, I will require a non-refundable deposit (50% of session fee/package rate) to reschedule. The remainder of your balance is due when your proofs gallery / client portal is ready.

For Upcoming Clients:
Preparing for a Successful Session

  • When you book your shoot, I will share my current headshot wardrobe guide and packing list for your session! Here are some thoughts ahead of time:

    Rule #1 | First Impression

If you’re felling stuck on where to start with selecting wardrobe, begin with these questions: What consideration might you make about your wardrobe for a first date? What considerations might you make about your wardrobe for the first day of school?

These scenarios are first impressions, much like your headshot is! You want to put your best face forward but be true to you. Clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable in your skin. With your personal style in mind, lean toward timeless and classic choices that will help your images stand the test of time and serve you as a career investment the longest.

When it comes to actor headshots and “type”, I have much more to say in my headshot wardrobe guide.

    Rule #2 | On-Camera Do’s & Don’ts

For on-camera wardrobe, I advise to steer clear of noticeable lettering, logos, or bold graphic design that might distract from your face. I recommend prioritizing texture over pattern to create interest in an on-camera outfit. For example, distressed denim, fabric ribbing or sheer layering succeeds over busy stripes or prints. Though, I’m not afraid of vibrant colors and certain patterns and prints if they serve the ultimate goal for the image. When chosen tactfully, certain bold choices can really make an image sing with self-expression.

    Rule #3 | Bring Options

Take the number of looks you’re shooting and double it. Shooting 2 looks? Bring 4 options to review and discuss.

    Rule #4 | Good Condition

Intentionally distressed garments are fine! However, wardrobe options should be free of damage - stains, snags, wrinkles. If your t-shirt has noticeable armpit stains, I don’t care if it’s your absolute favorite, don’t wear it (Nope - I won’t retouch your shirt.) Please find something similar without imperfections!

  • One “look” is a single cohesive wardrobe choice, hair/facial hair style and makeup application that all work together.

Once a look is chosen, there will be a lighting test. Once we’ve agreed that we like the choice, any big change to hair, makeup or clothing that would require you to step away to change or get back in the makeup chair is a shift into a second “look”.

Examples of changing into a second “look”: changing your shirt, curling straight hair or vice versa, changing or removing a wig or extensions, shaving your face, changing a natural makeup look to a bold red lip and smokey eye, etc.

  • My retouching style aims to keep your headshots looking professionally finished but true to life.

Although a lot can be achieved through digital retouching, I prefer a natural final look that is supported by client preparation, makeup and good lighting. A specialty retouch request is a retouching service that goes beyond my typical retouching process, which is detailed in the section above (See: RETOUCHING STYLE). My goal is to capture you at your best, not alter how you appear!

Here are a few of the most common specialty retouch request and my stance on each of them:

    • Removing braces, retainers & dental accessories: If you wear braces, you will have braces in your headshots. If you wear Invisaline or a visible retainer, please be prepared to remove it during the session.

    • Removing Tattoos: As tattoos are features of the complexion, I will remove tattoos if it is specifically requested by the client for a certain look ahead of time. Please let me know ahead of time if you would like a tattoo removed for one of your looks as I will sometimes apply makeup on the piece in addition to digital retouching, depending on your tattoos placement.

    • Altering hair color: Whatever color your hair is the day of your session is the hair color you will have in your headshot. Please prepare your hair to be the color you would like it to be in your headshots before your session.

    • Removing piercings & permanent jewelry: If you wear facial jewelry and would like to not have it appear in your headshot, please remove the jewelry that you are able to and I will retouch the sight of the piercing. If you’re unable to remove your jewelry, it will be part of the final image.

    • Altering nails: Please come with a nail finish and length that works for you. I won’t alter the color or length of your nails in your image.

    • Removing unwanted facial hair: Whether through shaving or bleaching, please remove unwanted facial hair before your session. I can smooth out redness or irritation from shaving but I will not digitally remove unwanted hair.

    • Altering or Retouching Clothing: Please wear wardrobe for your session that is free of unwanted wear-and-tear (stains, snags, holes, damage). I will not alter or retouch clothing. If working in-studio, I will have a steamer and lint roller available to keep wardrobe looking fresh. If you don’t feel confident that you own wardrobe options that will be appropriate for your session, please let me know. I have lots of tips and tricks for how to curate wardrobe for your headshot session without breaking the bank and can work with you to build some strong looks.

  • Plus-Ones | Guest Policy

If desired - Absolutely! Bring the person that will contribute most to creating a comfortable and supportive environment for you.

    Minors | Chaperone Policy

Photo subjects under the age of eighteen are required to have a parent or guardian chaperone their headshot session.

  • People often forget to bring… appropriate undergarments! Hear me out.

Try each of your wardrobe options on in front of a mirror or for someone you trust before the session and doublecheck if your undergarments are helping or hurting the fit and appearance of your wardrobe! Avoid a dark bra under a light shirt, remember to pack seamless pasties or a strapless bra if you’d prefer to not have visible bra straps, etc.

This does not just apply to women’s wardrobe, it applies to everyone. I encourage attention to detail ahead of time.

For Current Clients:
Final Product and Usage

  • Timeline Expectations

WEEK ONE | Client Portal & Proofs Gallery Shared
You’ll receive your proofs gallery link via email within roughly one week of your session. In this client portal, you’ll be able to download and share your images as well as indicate which photos you would like retouched.

This photo gallery will be an overview of the whole session. Though, the number of images in this proofs gallery will not reflect the number of times my camera shutter closed during the session.

Part of my process behind the scenes involves selecting only the strongest images for review and retouching. That is part of why I emphasize familiarizing with my portfolio and style before booking as this proofs gallery will have been selected in my artistic discretion. You will still have a large number of images (sometimes hundreds, depending on your package type) to review, download, submit for retouching and enjoy!

    WEEK TWO | Retouching
Once I’ve received your retouch request images via your client portal, they will be retouched and returned to you via your client portal, within roughly one week.

This timeline can vary with the levels of retouching work requested. The more retouching an image requires, the longer the turn around time can take. I emphasize client preparation via attention to hair, makeup, skincare, facial hair grooming, wardrobe, etc. pre-shoot in order to ensure polished images both before and after retouching. Please review retouching expectations and specialty retouch requests above.

“Week Two” begins whenever I recieve your retouch request. So, take your time selecting the right images!

However, please note that your right to included-retouching as advertised by your package type is waived if I don’t hear from you within a month of delivering your proofs gallery. You can still make retouch requests, but they will be considered a la carte and you will be charged accordingly.

  • I do not currently provide in-house printing services for my headshot clients. This is mainly due to the reality that, nowadays, online submission is the norm.

Gone are the days of printing hundreds of headshots & resumes to store in your car and handout at auditions, meetings and showcases. Today, self-tapes are more common and, for the working actors, digital headshot & resume submissions has become standard.

However, I still recommend you retain a dozen or so prints of your current headshot and resume and knowledge of proper formatting so you’re ready when it’s called for. READ ARTICLE : BACKSTAGE: How To Print Headshots

I also have suggestions on local printing services that understand the unique specifications of headshot printing so that your headshots look as good in your hands as they do online.
